Topline:

Jim Harbaugh was hired as the next head coach for the Los Angeles Chargers, fresh off the heels of a College Football National Championship with the University of Michigan.

Do the Chargers have a chance now? The Chargers get their preferred candidate — a proven winner. Harbaugh took the Michigan Wolverines to the top of college football. Before that, he led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2012.

Why now: The Chargers have been looking for a head coach since last month, when they fired Brandon Staley, who finished with three mediocre seasons (and zero playoff wins) despite having a talented roster.

Quirks: Harbaugh is known to have a quirky personality that has caused tension with management in his coaching stops. He was involved in two scandals last season at Michigan that involved allegations of sign-stealing and illicit recruiting. He's still under investigation by the NCAA and the penalties could roll on over to the NFL.
