LA’s City Administrator On Where The Budget Stands, And The Possibility Of Eliminating 2,000 Vacant City Positions
Yesterday on AirTalk, we discussed a financial status report that City Administrative Officer Matt Szabo made to Mayor Karen Bass, Council President Paul Krekorian, and Chair of the Budget, Finance, and Innovation Committee Bob Blumenfield. The March 18th report outlines the budgetary challenges facing the city which is “experiencing significant financial challenges comprised of high levels of overspending and revenue shortfalls that are likely to be unrecoverable.” According to the report, Los Angeles’ overspending currently stands at $288.56 million. One potential solution? Eliminating up to 2,000 vacant city positions “at an annual value of $150 million to $200 million.” 2,000 jobs is about 5% of the total city workforce. Joining us to discuss the report is Matt Szabo, city administrative officer of Los Angeles.
A Brief History Of The SigAlert
There’s a term you’ve probably come across more than once while traveling around Southern California: SigAlert. It’s one of the best ways to keep on top of traffic delays in near real-time, but they’re also a harbinger of stress. If a SigAlert is issued on your route, good luck getting to your destination on time. There could be a car stalled on the freeway, a car crash or any number of other problems shutting down lanes. But do you know why they're called SigAlerts? They actually started out as a radio tool.
Today on AirTalk, LAist’s L.A. Explained Reporter Caitlin Hernandez stops by to share the history of how the SigAlert was created, where it gets its name and how it became a staple of daily traffic coverage on radio and TV in Southern California.
