Two Top Hollywood Players Are Pushing Hiring In New Directions

As the 2024 Hollywood job market continues to rebound more slowly than had originally been expected this year, the job listings at today’s top streamer and studio — Netflix and NBCUniversal — reveal their hiring priorities.
Why it matters: Netflix and NBCU are arguably the two most flourishing studios in town. Netflix’s stock price has doubled in the last 12 months, and it’s grown to more than 260 million users worldwide. NBCUniversal’s Oppenheimer dominated the Academy Awards, and it ended last year as the highest-grossing studio at the box office, overtaking Disney, which had been the longtime leader.
Ready player one: Writers, put down those pens, notepads and MacBook Pros and grab a controller or calculator. A deep dive into Netflix’s current 85 Los Angeles-based job listings revealed that nearly one in five of those opportunities is games focused. Netflix’s games division might be small, but it’s on the rise and they tout themselves as a “small, scrappy team with big ambitions.” Runner up was its finance division, with a total of 10 open positions.
Digging for “other” opportunities: Meanwhile, at NBCU, the most robust list of career opportunities came from an area their job portal categorizes as “other,” where you’ll find everything from a shot at being a sous chef within Universal Studios Hollywood to a role as Peacock’s director of influencer engagement. While a majority of these “other” jobs were at its theme park, there were also some high-end marketing gigs thrown in the mix.
