Queer LA LIVE: Joyful Music

Tuesday, January 30, 2024 7:00 PM - 8:15 PM
  • The Crawford, 474 S. Raymond Ave., Pasadena
$0-$15

Queer LA is your space to help you get the most out of LGBTQ+ life in Greater Los Angeles, a long-term project to help you figure out things big and small — with a focus on joy. And now we’re bringing that joy to the stage. Queer LA LIVE is a new live event series that will explore what brings us joy, how we build community, and where we can find spaces to connect nearby.

On January 30, host Caitlin Hernández (they/them) will talk with special guests about navigating the music industry as a queer artist. We’ll also get the chance to hear some live music from Mermaid and Danielle Lande. After the show, stick around for a set by DJ Funky Caramelo and enjoy delicious food from Fat Boys. And we want to hear your stories of joy too! Tell us all about it here. Bar and food concessions begin at 6 p.m.

ABOUT CAITLIN HERNÁNDEZ
Caitlin Hernández is a reporter at LAist, covering LA Explained and Queer LA. They’re focused on exploring what makes Greater L.A. tick so that everyday Angelenos can better understand our complex region and connect more with the people living in it.

ABOUT MERMAID
Even the greatest skeptic will believe in soulmates upon hearing Brittany Campbell and Candace Quarrels’ story, which encompasses music, love, friendship, and so much more. Upon meeting in the Chicago production of “Hamilton,” the pair went on to form Mermaid, a Los Angeles-based project that defies genre and has even won the attention of Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard, who handpicked their song “Find Me” for NPR's Tiny Desk Top Shelf contest in 2020. Today, their debut LP, “Iridescence,” is available for listening everywhere. Infused with soul, R&B and a heady combination of alt-rock, jazz, punk, pop, and a touch of metal. No matter what sonic shade “Iridescence” adopts, it is seamlessly held together by Mermaid’s transcendent harmonies and connection.

ABOUT DANIELLE LANDE
Danielle Lande (they/them) was born and raised in Los Angeles and burst onto the LA music scene in 2018. They quickly captivated audiences with their soulful voice, intimate songwriting, and unique sound drawing on pop and jazz. Danielle’s music has been heard on KCRW and live at legendary Los Angeles venues like the Hotel Cafe. They’ve performed as an opening act for Grammy-nominated band The Marías and continue to play shows to a growing, enthusiastic fanbase.

Danielle is also the founder of Queersound, a local concert series showcasing talented artists from the LGBTQ+ community. They’re currently running a residency at The Silverlake Lounge with shows on the second Thursday of each month. Danielle is an accomplished multidisciplinary creative. Beyond their artist project, you can find them working on an original musical, editing video content for brands and artists, and writing music for television, short films, podcasts, and live shows.
