It’s my favorite time of the week — Food Friday! This week, we’ll be talking about downtown L.A.’s Grand Central Market!

Wait, what is Food Friday? Every Friday, we'll give you ideas on what to eat, where to go and what to cook — plus the people and stories behind the dishes.

Conquering Grand Central Market

Can I tell you a secret? I have never been to downtown L.A.’s Grand Central Market. I have been wanting to go for years and years, but honestly, the idea of going there feels overwhelming. There are so many places to eat, and I just don’t know where to start.

But this guide from LAist’s Gab Chabrán just dropped, and it’s all about hacking your way into the grand dame of downtown dining. Is it a coincidence or maybe the universe is sending me a sign? If you want to explore the whole place and try all the foods, there’s some planning involved — including taking Gab’s suggestion to bring a cooler and some ice packs, but it’s doable.

You can read the guide here and listen to the How To LA episode here.

And yes, universe, I will be going … next month. I promise.

Come get your weekend plans

I’m happy that it’s Friday. As I mentioned in yesterday’s email, I need to get some gift shopping done, and I will hold myself to that. But I also want to do something fun.

I realize the photo I used for this section feels like it could be an accidental Halloween photo, but I swear, it’s holiday-related. Just take a look at some of my event picks for the weekend to understand it. If you want to see the full list, click here.

  • Krampus Nights at PRS, Los Feliz: Attend an evening all about folklore, holiday traditions and the famed Alpine monster (the one pictured above) with author and Krampus expert Al Ridenour (The Krampus and the Old Dark Christmas) and friends.
  • Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles' Hooray for Holidays, Beverly Hills: In Hooray for Holidays, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles performs more than 20 holiday tunes from the golden age of cinema, including songs from Meet Me in St. Louis, White Christmas, The Muppet Christmas Carol, Love Actually and more. Wayne Brady is this year’s special guest.

Yuletide Cinemaland 2023, Montecito Heights: Street Food Cinema dresses up as Yuletide Cinemaland for the holidays, with 10 days of outdoor festivities and film screenings at Heritage Square Museum.
