About the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria

The only professional council for all grades and cadres of nurses and midwives in Nigeria is the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), sometimes known as “The Council.”

The Council is the sole corporate, statutory, and legal entity entrusted by the Federal Government of Nigeria with particular duties to carry out in order to guarantee the provision of safe and efficient nursing and midwifery care for the public.

By Decree No. 89, 1979, currently known as the Nursing and Midwifery (Registration etc.) Act, the Federal Ministry of Health, established the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria as a category B parastatal. Cap. Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, Chapter 143.

With regional offices in Sokoto, Kaduna, Bauchi, Enugu, PortHarcourt, and Lagos, the Council is headquartered in Abuja.
